FAQs

LET OUR FENCE BUILDERS IN WINSTON-SALEM, NC HELP YOU

When you're considering installing a new fence or electric gate opener for your home or business, there are bound to be plenty of questions you'll want answered before making a final decision. After all, you want to know that the type of fence you choose will look the best for the style of your property and also do what you need it to. The professionals at Latham's Custom Fence are always happy to answer our customers' questions, but if you don't feel like picking up the phone just yet, you can refer to our list of FAQs below.

Q: How long will the fence last?
A:
The life of a fence depends on many factors, including the integrity of the fabrication climate, materials used, climate, and soil conditions, to name a few. For strength, longevity, and durability, Latham's Custom Fence uses only #1 Grade material and if properly built and installed correctly, a fence should provide 15 to 20 years of enjoyment.

Q: Can I match a specific color?
A:
We offer ornamental fencing in several popular colors. Each powder-coat finish has been specifically formulated for durability, with ultra-violet inhibitors to withstand the elements.

Q: Are there different types of gates for commercial projects?
A:
In addition to single-walk and double-drive gates, several types of sliding gates are available for commercial and high-security applications.

Q: Is vinyl safe for children and animals?
A:
Yes. Vinyl products have smooth surfaces with no nails, sharp edges, or splinters.

Q: What can be done to eliminate the effects of weathering and keep that 'new fence' look?
A:
While there's no way to eliminate the weathering of wood, it's relatively easy to minimize the effects:
Use three back rails (6' fence), two back rails (4', 5' fence), or 4 back rails (8' fence) for more hold-down points.

Use only hot-dipped galvanized, or stainless steel fasteners with a ring or spiral shank to minimize warp and rust stains.

Treat the surfaces of fence boards with a water-repellent solution to reduce the rate at which moisture is absorbed and released. This solution should also have a good UV inhibitor if you don't want the fence to gray over time.

Follow a regular maintenance program of cleaning and refinishing every few years with a "clear" or "toner" water-repellent containing UV inhibitors. This will revitalize a dingy appearance caused by dirt, mildew, or graying. It's like washing and waxing your car. Opinions differ on how necessary it is to perform regular maintenance, but most agree your fence will look much better for the effort.

Q: What are the black spots on my boards?
A:
Small, sooty-looking circular spots are caused by mold or mildew. Installing your fence will expose the wood to airflow and stop mold. You can clean mold or mildew from your baseboards with a number of commercial cleaning products from the store.

Q: What do I need to know before having the fence installed?
A:
  You need to assess:
The purpose of the fence (privacy, pet or pool enclosure, property, etc.).
Where the fence will be located?
What type of fence do you want?
When you plan to have the work completed. (For example, are there landscaping, remodeling, or surveying issues that need to be completed before the fence installation?)
Ensure you’re prepared to live with a fence that will be there for many years to come.

Do you need an electric gate opener?

Q: My property isn't flat and slopes up and down, what can I do?
A:
One attractive option is to stair-step each panel. A second option is to rack or bias the panels, allowing the fence to follow the contour of the ground.
